As technology continues to evolve into a more complex world, hackers also evolve with it. Hackers will use multiple ways to attempt to get your personal information to scam you. Below you will find information on a few ways hackers may try to obtain your personal information.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending emails or other messages (text messages) purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords, debit/credit card numbers, PIN, etc.

What is Social Engineering?

Social engineering is the use of deception to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential or personal information that may be used for fraudulent purposes.

Email:

A source of social engineering and phishing is used via email. A hacker will email you and include words such as “attention required” or “see the attached document for your review and signature.” If you click on the attachment or embedded link, the hackers will be able to obtain all of your confidential information located on your device.

Text/SMS Message:

You may receive a text message that appears to be from Bank of Dawson regarding products such as your online/mobile banking credentials, card transactions, or information about your account. The text will include an embedded link similar to emails. Once you click the link, the hackers will be able to obtain all of your confidential information located on your device.

Phone Calls:

An increase in spoofed phone calls is on the arise. This is an act where a hacker will use the banks phone number and call you pretending to be a bank representative. They will ask you information such as your account number, social security number, address, debit card number, PIN, or online/mobile banking credentials. By providing this information, you are giving them information to steal your identity.

Protection:

  • ALWAYS be suspicious of emails or text messages coming from what appears to be Bank of Dawson.
  • If you did not previously speak to a bank representative and request information,
    do not click any links. Please call Bank of Dawson.
  • Bank of Dawson will never ask you for the following if we call you:
    • PIN for your Debit Card
    • Online/Mobile Banking password
    • Email Address
    • Full Social Security Number
  • If you receive a text or email that you think is suspicious, always call us to verify
    the information.
  • If you receive a phone call that you think is suspicious, hang up and call the
    bank’s number as verification.
